After more than 20 years at Penryn School, I figure most of you know me by name, Ms. Heidi Hayes. However, I realize some of you may know little about my background. I am a sixth generation Californian. I grew up in southern California on the beach, the daughter of a movie actor. Doesn’t get more SoCal than that. I have lived up and down this great state of ours, literally from the mountains to the sea. I graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a degree in Botany, took five years off to live, work, and raise a family in a small ski resort, Bear Valley, returning to school for my multiple subject teaching credential at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. Upon graduation, I relocated back to northern California, to the small town of Georgetown where I still reside. I spent the first fourteen years of my career teaching seventh and eighth grade science and language arts. I moved with my reptiles and 30 year old frog to Room 4 in 2004 to teach third grade.
I come from a family of educators. As a matter of fact, my grandmother spent sixty years working with children and my aunt is still teaching in the classroom at the age of 75. I knew by the end of my B.A. that I wanted to follow the same path; I just took a little detour to have a family along the way. I love teaching! I love everything about it, starting, of course, with the children. I am fascinated by the whole process and mystery of learning. I am looking forward to another great year of learning, exploring, and discovering with my students; the children of Penryn.
